Nyhetsbrev fra Presidenten i WCF:
4 oktober 2011: CURLING: WORLD FINANCIAL GROUP EXTENDS TITLE SPONSORSHIP OF CONTINENTAL CUP For immediate release: 4 October 2011 OTTAWA, CANADA - The World Curling Federation and Canadian Curling Association (CCA) have announced that World Financial Group has extended its title sponsorship of the Continental Cup through to 2013, with an option for 2014.
World Curling Federation President, Kate Caithness, is delighted by this latest agreement with the organization. She said: “We welcome the World Financial Group’s extension of their sponsorship of the Continental Cup. This latest investment highlights their continued commitment to the sport of curling and this showcase event.” She added “it is encouraging to see that yet another internationally renowned organization has recognized the benefits of investing in curling. I have no doubt that our Member Associations, many of whom will be represented at the Continental Cup, will be delighted with the news of their support, which will go a long way in helping our sport continue to grow.” World Financial Group came on board as title sponsor for the unique international competition known as the Continental Cup last year, when it was held in St. Albert, Alberta, Canada and won in record fashion by Team North America over Team World.
“Over the past couple of years, the CCA has been fortunate enough to have the privilege of forging a wonderful corporate relationship with the World Financial Group,” commented Greg Stremlaw, Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Curling Association. “Their organization has truly embraced the sport of curling and the CCA is pleased to announce that the World Financial Group has decided to become a comprehensive sub-sponsor to all of the CCA’s Season of Champions properties starting this year, in addition to extending its involvement as title sponsor of the Continental Cup.”
In a separate agreement, World Financial Group (WFG) will also become a full sub-sponsor of the other five Canadian Curling Association ‘Season Of Champions’ events, beginning with the 2011-12 season. Richard Williams, President of WFG Canada also offered his support, adding: “World Financial Group has been so impressed by what the sport of curling has to offer in terms of excitement, entertainment and the bringing together of families, that we are pleased to report that WFG will be extending its sponsorship of the Continental Cup through 2013. We are also delighted to announce that WFG has signed on as a sponsor of the Season of Champions.”
The 2012 World Financial Group Continental Cup, featuring six teams (three men’s and three women’s) from North America versus six teams representing The World, will take place January 12-15 in Langley, British Columbi, Canada. Currently, North America holds a 4-3 edge over Team World since the inaugural Continental Cup in 2002 in Regina, as each side has triumphed in alternate years.
The World Financial Group Continental Cup is a joint venture of the Canadian Curling Association, United States Curling Association and the World Curling Federation. The 2011-12 Season of Champions (events in Canada) title sponsors are Capital One (Canada Cup), World Financial Group (Continental Cup), M&M Meat Shops (Canadian Juniors), Kruger (Scotties Tournament of Hearts), Tim Hortons (Brier) and Ford of Canada (World Women’s).
Betablokker tillatt:(29.sept. 2011) *After a review by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the World Curling Federation, it has been announced that curling has now been officially removed from the list of sports which prohibits the use of beta-blockers.
Athletes taking beta-blockers will now be allowed to compete in competitive curling events without the need for Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) from 1st January 2012 as a result of this decision.
Beta-blockers are a class of drug used predominantly for the management of cardiac irregularities, heart conditions and high blood pressure. Previously, under section P2 of WADA’s Prohibited List, the use of the following, but not limited to, beta-blockers were prohibited in curling competition:
• Acebutolol • Alprenolol • Atenolol • Betaxolol • Bisoprolol • Bunolol • Carteolol • Carvedilol • Celiprolol • Esmolol • Labetalol • Levobunolol • Metipranolol • Metoprolol • Nadolol • Oxprenolol • Pindolol • Propranolol • Sotalol • Timolol
IMPORTANT - Athletes taking beta-blockers will still require a valid TUE until 31st December 2011 if they wish to compete in any curling event.
The WADA Executive Committee confirmed this amendment to existing rules on September 17th 2011. Further information on the Prohibited List and WADA can be found on www.wada-ama.org

For immediate release: 5 August 2011
LANGLEY, CANADA - The teams have been confirmed for the 2012 World Financial Group Continental Cup, presented by Monsanto.
The eighth edition of this unique international curling competition takes place from 12 to 15 January 2012 at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, British Columbia, Canada. The event features curling action from some of the top teams in the world with six teams from North America pitched against six teams representing the rest of the world in various disciplines during the four days.
Playing Team games, Mixed Doubles, Singles, Mixed Skins and Skins games, teams win points for wins (or ties), with the first side to reach 201 points declared the winner. Currently, Team North America holds a 4-3 edge over Team World since the inaugural Continental Cup was contested in 2002 in Regina, Canada. Team World’s colours will be worn by teams skipped by Niklas Edin from Sweden, Tom Brewster from Scotland, Norway’s Thomas Ulsrud, Sweden’s Anette Norberg, China’s Bingyu Wang and Eve Muirhead from Scotland.
The captain for Team World will be former world champion David Hay from Scotland while Sweden’s Peja Lindholm, a three-time world champion, returns as coach. Ulsrud is reigning European champion and earned a silver medal at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Brewster and Edin collected silver and bronze medals, respectively, at the 2011 Ford World Men’s Curling Championship in Regina. Norberg, two-time Olympic gold medallist, won her third world title last season at the Capital One World Women’s Curling Championship in Esbjerg, Denmark. She is also a three-time Continental Cup winner. Bingyu Wang, the 2009 world champion, was also a bronze medallist at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games and 2011 Women’s World Championship. Muirhead took silver at the 2010 Ford World Women’s Championship and is a four-time and current world junior champion.
Team North America will be represented by four teams from Canada - skipped by Jeff Stoughton from Winnipeg, Glenn Howard from Coldwater, Amber Holland of Kronau, Saskatchewan and Stefanie Lawton of Saskatoon and two teams from the United States - skipped by Pete Fenson of Bemidji, Minnesota and Patti Lank of Lewiston, New York. Their captain will be former world champion Julie Skinner of Victoria, British Columbia while three-time Canadian Men’s Champion and two-time world champion Rick Lang of Thunder Bay will return as coach.
Stoughton is reigning men’s world champion, winning his second title at the 2011 Ford World Men’s Championship in Regina. Howard is a three-time Brier (Canadian Men’s Championship) and world champion and won last year’s Canada Cup in Medicine Hat to qualify for the 2012 World Financial Group Continental Cup. Lawton also won last year’s Canada Cup while Holland won the Scotties Tournament of Hearts (Canadian Women’s Championship) in Charlottetown, then took silver at the 2011 Women’s Worlds in Denmark. Fenson, the 2006 Olympic bronze medallist, and Lank, a former world silver medallist, are the reigning US national champions. In 2012 the winning side will receive $52,000 Cdn ($2,000 per member, including captain and coach), while the losing side gets $26,000 ($1,000 per member, including captain and coach). In addition, the side which wins the final Men’s Skins game receives an additional $13,000. The Canadian sports channel TSN will provide complete coverage of the event, which is being sponsored for the second consecutive year by World Financial Group. At the inaugural Cup in Regina, Canada in 2002, Team North America pulled out an incredible last stone victory when Canada’s Kevin Martin defeated Sweden’s Peja Lindholm in the final men’s Skins game to win 207-193.
In 2003, Team Europe (later to become known as Team World) turned the tables with a 208-179 victory in Thunder Bay.
In 2004 in Medicine Hat, before a record four-day crowd of 42,317, it was North America’s turn again, notching a 228-172 win.
The 2006 renewal, staged in Chilliwack, British Columbia, featured all of the medal-winning teams from the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin, Italy, as Team Europe pulled even with a 229-171 victory. In 2007, the Cup returned to Medicine Hat, and once again, North America prevailed, 290-110, this time clinching the Cup in record fashion on Saturday evening, prior to Sunday’s final women’s and men’s Skins games.
The 2008 Continental Cup was contested in Camrose, Alberta and won by Team World, 208-192, which evened the series at three victories apiece, as each side continued to prevail in alternate years. Last season, in St. Albert, Alberta, the trend continued as North America romped to a record 298-102 decision.
In 2005 and 2009, no Continental Cup events were scheduled due to the curling trials which qualified Canada’s teams for the Olympic Winter Games. Event Passes with guaranteed seating are now on sale. CURLING: Erzurum Turkey to host World Mixed Doubles Championship 2012
For immediate release: 18 August 2011
Perth, Scotland / Erzurum, Turkey – The World Curling Federation and the Turkish Ice Skating Federation (Turkish Curling Association) have announced that the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship 2012 will be staged in Erzurum, Turkey.
The event will take place from 23-29 April at the 1000 seat Milli Piyango Curling Hall which was the purpose-built venue for the curling competition at the Winter Universiade in January 2011.
“The World Curling Federation is delighted to announce that the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship will be held in Erzurum in 2012. Since the Turkish Curling Association joined WCF in 2009, Turkey has shown considerable commitment to the establishing the sport of curling in the country. Following on from the resounding success of the curling competition at the 2011 Winter Universiade, we expect the 2012 Mixed Doubles Championship to be another first class event,” said World Curling Federation President Kate Caithness.
Fahrettin Kandemir President of the Turkish Ice Skating Federation (Turkish Curling Association) said: “We are very proud to be the host country of 2012 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship. Curling has only been played in Turkey for two years and the Universiade 2011 was the very first international curling competition held in Erzurum. We have achieved very good results during these first two years for the development of curling known as ‘ice chess’ in Turkey. We strongly believe that organising these events serve to develop the sport further. We look forward to welcoming the curling family to Erzurum in April 2012.”
The 2012 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship will be fifth event of its kind. Inaugurated in Vierumaki, Finland in 2008, the second world championship was held in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy in 2009. In 2010 the event was staged in Chelyabinsk, Russia and in 2011 it took place in St Paul, Minnesota in the United States.
Instead of playing in teams of four, mixed doubles curling is for teams of two players – one male and one female (no alternate/spare player is allowed). - The game is played on the same sheets of ice as “traditional” curling. - Teams have only six stones each (instead of eight) and one of those stones, from each team, is prepositioned on the centreline before each end of play starts. - Player one delivers the first and last stones and player two plays the second, third and fourth stones. If they choose to, the two players may swap positions from one end to the next. - Sweeping can be done by both team members. - Each team receives 46 minutes of playing time and games are fixed at 8 ends – compared to 73 minutes and 10 ends for “traditional‟ curling.
In total 24 nations participated at the 2011 World Championship in St Paul (Australia, Austria, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Estonia, Finland, France, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Korea, Latvia, New Zealand, Norway, Russia, Scotland, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and hosts USA).
In St Paul, Switzerland secured a third gold medal in the discipline (2008, 2009 & 2011) when Sven Michel and Alina Pätz beat Russia’s Alexey Tselousov and Alina Kovaleva in the final 11-2. France (Amaury Pernette and Pauline Jeanneret) beat Sweden (Anders and Sabina Kraupp) 9-7 to win the bronze medal.
