Norge slo Latvia 11-2!

Etter noen tøffe kamper møtte Norge Latvia i natt.  

De norske jentene ga seg ikke før de hadde slått Latvia hele 11-2!

Swift Current, Canada - 23 March 2010:  Once again Canada’s Jennifer Jones was pushed all the way before eventually winning her eleventh session game against USA by 6-4.

After USA blanked the seventh and eighth ends looking for a big score, this game turned on two bad shots by USA skip Erika Brown in the ninth, when she first rubbed on a guard and then was heavy with her final draw to give up a steal of one for a 6-4 Canadian lead.

“I’m pretty happy with how we were playing today” said Jones afterwards, although she was clearly not best pleased with the USA blanking tactic.  “I don’t think that’s how curling should be played and that’s not how we do it” she commented.  This seventh straight win now keeps the Canadian unblemished record going as they continue to top the rankings.

Earlier in the day, the USA had overcome Denmark by 6-5 in a tight game to keep their strong medal hopes going.  After that game, skip Brown said, “that wasn’t our best game, but it shows we’re resilient”.

Scotland sat out the eleventh session after two strong wins – by 7-3 over Norway and then, in just six ends, by 10-1 over debutants Latvia.  These results kept the Scots in second place, with six wins and one loss, and nineteen-year-old skip explained the secret of their success – “We’re having fun, we’re enjoying it, and we’re playing well”.

Behind these leading contenders, three teams are tied on the same won four, lost three record – Germany, Russia and Sweden - who all managed to beat each other on Tuesday.  In session 9, Germany had a 9-2 win over Sweden before losing by 4-7 to Russia in session 10.  Following more of  their regular team line-up changes, including a substitution at the fifth end, Russia then went on to lose by 10-3 to Sweden in just seven ends of their session 11 encounter.

Defending champions China kept their slim hopes alive with two wins on Tuesday, beating Switzerland by 6-5 and then Japan by a more convincing 11-6, but on just three wins and four losses, alongside Denmark, the odds are stacked against them.

Switzerland beat Japan by 7-4 while Norway had an 11-2 victory over Latvia in the eleventh session, in both cases recording only their second wins of the week.

These results also mean that Latvia and Japan, who prop up the table, have still only won one game each, with six losses.
